Refined vs Crude Sunflower Oil: Key Differences for Buyers

What is crude sunflower oil?

Crude (unrefined) sunflower oil is the oil obtained from sunflower seeds by pressing and/or solvent extraction and then filtered to remove solids. It still contains phospholipids (gums), free fatty acids, waxes, pigments and other minor components. It may be hydrated (water-degummed) before shipment. Crude oil is normally bought in bulk by refineries and food processors, not sold to consumers.

What is refined sunflower oil?

Refined oil has passed through a refining line. The usual steps are degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation; for sunflower oil there is typically also winterisation, which removes waxes so the oil stays clear. The result is a clear, neutral-tasting oil suitable for retail packing and food manufacturing.

How each type is supplied

Who buys which

Refineries and processors buy crude oil to refine it themselves. Distributors, retail chains and food producers buy refined oil, either packed or in bulk. If you are not sure which fits your business, tell us your destination and intended use and we will suggest the right product.

What to compare in a contract

Agree the quality parameters in the contract and have them verified by an independent inspection company (for example SGS or Bureau Veritas) at loading. Typical parameters to specify are free fatty acids or acid value, peroxide value, moisture and impurities, and — for refined oil — colour. Ask for a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis.
